What is the Burlytic® Systems deburring process?
The Burlytic® Systems deburring process is an electrochemical deburring (ECD) and finishing process for use on most hardened and non-hardened metals. The Burlytic process uses a patented electrolyte solution and a computer-controlled energy source to achieve a new level of performance in electrolytic deburring. The electrolyte has a high electrical resistance. When a machined part is immersed in the solution and a low DC voltage charge is applied between the part and a stationary cathode, an electrostatic charge is concentrated at the sharp features (burrs) on your part. In high density areas of the electrical field, burrs are dissolved and carried away by the chilled electrolyte. By varying the voltage in controlled pulses, it is possible to provide polishing action over an entire workpiece or to focus the deburring activity to just the edges of the part.

What metals can be effectively treated by our process?
The Burlytic Systems deburring process is compatible with most hardened and non-hardened metals, including:

What are the advantages of the Burlytic Systems process over other ECD processes?
The major advantage of Burlytic Systems deburring process is the computer-controlled pulsating electric current which focuses the electrical field on burrs and sharp edges while adjoining surfaces are significantly less affected. Material removal ranging from 0.0005 inch to 0.0015 inch with a 5-10 surface roughness improvement factor is realized in most applications while troublesome burrs are attacked and removed. When using our process, your parts are not exposed to any mechanical or thermal stresses. As a result, there are no changes in the physical or chemical properties of the metal. Our process is ideal for selective (controlled) deburring and the removal of burrs that are inaccessible with most other processes and it is an accurately repeatable process. The surface treatment which may accompany our process will enhance the cosmetic appearance and value of your parts.

How long does it take to process a part in the Burlytic Systems process?
The average process time is largely dependent on your part characteristics including part size, number of burrs, part material and the nature of the burr being removed. Process times may be as little as 30 seconds or as much as several minutes. Multiple parts processed at the same time will often require a slightly longer cycle time than if only one of the parts were processed. Polishing is typically accomplished in 1 to 5 minutes. As a rule, our process is much faster and far more consistent than hand deburring.

Why does the process remove burrs and not affect the part itself?
It is a well known phenomenon that electric fields will concentrate at sharp points. We see this principal at work with the common lightening rod. When we apply voltage to the high resistance electrolyte, the current is focused into the highest concentration of the electrical field which will typically be at the burrs. The burrs are then released in the form of hydroxides, which are insoluble in the electrolyte and then mechanically filtered from the solution. The process is selective, but not infinitely so. High points on the surface of a part may also be affected as these represent microscopic burrs on the surface. The burr removal here usually results in a smoother finish on the part.

Is the process repeatable?
Yes, highly repeatable. The electrolyte is non-wearing, and the process relies on highly repeatable electrical pulses from a switching type power supply like those used in the most sophisticated plating applications. Cycle time and current pulsing is computer-controlled and the electrolyte temperature is maintained through use of a chiller.

Is the cycle time material dependent?
As with all ECD processes, each metal has its own processing characteristics. Some metals require inhibiting, some don't, some will polish, some will granulate, some work very slowly, some very quickly and some won't process at all.

How important is part surface cleanliness to the process results?
The presence of oils, greases and even water soluble cutting fluids on the part will inhibit the electrical conductivity between it and the cathode. Additionally, these materials will contaminate the electrolyte and could adversely affect the treatment process. Therefore, it is required that all parts be cleaned before processing.

What happens to the burrs? Are they burned up? Are they dissolved?
As electrical current passes through the part and electrolyte, an electro-chemical process takes place at the part surface. The electrical current concentrates at points (the burrs) and along the part edges. This effect causes metal to be selectively dissolved into harmless metal hydroxides at the burred edges, thus effectively removing the burrs and leaving the surfaces of the part mostly unaffected. The edges may become slightly radiused. As burrs are dissolved, metal ions are released into the Burlyte® bath and continuously filtered.
